UL GLOBAL MARKET ACCESS CONFIGURATOR

Performance and safety certification – a global roadmap

Where is your next product launch planned? Once a market is pinpointed, you will need to navigate the complexities of international product safety and market access, especially regulatory compliance, performance testing and certification.

The UL Global Market Access Configurator maps out marks and certifications around the world. Select a product and region, and the map displays the relevant marks. Click on each mark for details.

Ready for the next step? Select ‘save and continue’ to contact UL on how to get there.

UL and Interoperability - testing your connections

Interoperability used to refer simply to M2M – two machines communicating to each other. The advent of easy internet access and the Internet of Things (IoT) has rocketed interoperability into a whole new dimension. Now, just about anything can be connected – cars, sensors, wearables, appliances, meters, so that people sometimes refer to it as the Internet of Everything.

Like many rapid advances, the technology behind them seems to work like magic. It functions so seamlessly, most people don’t give it a second thought, until it stops working. Manufacturers don’t want their products to lose the magic, so to speak, and are keen to find ways to ensure products earn a reputation for high-performance interoperability.

Problems arise frequently because with so many different kinds of products and industries featuring interoperability, connectivity occurs over a range of different technologies, protocols and dynamic systems. Assuring interoperability requires an expert that can cover all the bases.

UL’s Interop team has created a series of testing programs which know how to put a product through its paces, not matter what the device or technology. Tests recreate real-world scenarios, so manufacturers can see exactly at what point their product fails to connect. Manufacturers then take test findings and feedback from UL experts to fine-tune products into top performers.

By testing beforehand, manufacturers don’t run the risk of finding out a product’s interoperability performance is not up to par via poor customer reviews or recalls.

UL has also just opened a testing lab dedicated to the functionality of high-tech products. The IoT SSL Lab in Dongguan, China will provide advanced performance testing and innovative safety solutions to all IoT related industries covering the whole range of technologies from compatibility to EMC and wireless testing to cybersecurity.

CyberSecurity FOR THE INTERNET OF THINGS

New standards raise the bar on cybersecurity

The Internet of Things connects the world in ways unimaginable a decade ago. Soon 5.5 million new devices will become connected each day, dramatically changing the way we live and interact with our environment.

The benefits are clear; but are we addressing the risks? Data shared and spread via interconnected technologies is increasingly exposed to attacks by cybercriminals. One in five people will become the victim of a cybercrime. Security, operability and privacy in network-connectable products are at a greater risk of being breached, incurring huge financial losses.

In April 2016, UL launched the Cybersecurity Assurance Program (UL CAP). The new UL 2900 series of standards offers testable cybersecurity criteria for network-connectable products and systems.

UL CAP will help manufacturers and vendors by:

  • assessing software vulnerabilities
  • minimizing exploitation
  • addressing known malware
  • reviewing security controls
  • increasing security awareness

UL CAP evaluates both the security of network-connectable products and systems and the vendor processes for developing and maintaining products and systems with a security focus. UL can then suggest methods to help customers build safer products.

The UL CAP services will reach out to a wide range of industries such as: industrial control systems, medical devices, automotive, HVAC, lighting, smart home, appliances, alarm systems, fire systems, building automation, smart meters, network equipment, and consumer electronics.

Other services and trouble-shooting measures can be taken to support safety and security in Industry 4.0 initiatives such as EMC/Radio testing and confirming compliance to other relevant standards, including IEC 62443.

EMPOWERING THE GLOBAL
WIND INDUSTRY
Read more here
Wind energy leaders inspire up-and-coming players

Wind energy in Europe, for example in Germany, has seen enormous growth in the last two decades. UL-DEWI has helped shape much of that growth and has just recently celebrated its 25th anniversary in Germany.

In the beginning, UL-DEWI concentrated primarily on research, helping an emerging technology and market innovate solutions for wind energy development and distribution. Today the services sector has grown in importance and accounts for more than 75% of the company turnover. Customers benefit from this mix of research and services, because services are often based on the latest innovations. Two years in a row, UL-DEWI’s advisory services have been commended by the industry and commerce magazine BrandEins in the “Best Advisor” edition.

UL-DEWI has also founded the DEWI-OCC Offshore and Certification Centre GmbH, marking entry into the important field of wind turbine certifications and helping ensure that UL-DEWI is well-positioned to meet future challenges in offshore wind energy.

The anniversary of DEWI Germany was a great opportunity to look back, it also sheds light on the future of wind energy. UL-DEWI’s expansion into international markets has led to rewarding exchanges in regions where wind energy has great untapped potential, for example Brazil.

With its impressive amount of wind resources, it’s no surprise Brazil is among the top ten countries using wind power. By improving its energy sector planning in the next 10 years, Brazil could radically strengthen its utilization of wind.

Brazil will benefit greatly from experienced experts who can advise and guide the national energy sector to safely and economically deploy the state-of-the-art renewable energy technology. By 2023, Brazil’s energy matrix is projected to be 11.5% wind power, and will certainly grow from strength to strength.
